Welcome!
This
was the Portal or subsidiary web site for the
Greater Thame U3A where Greater means the geographical
area of Thame town and surrounding villages and hamlets that do not
have a U3A of their own.
People
arriving at this site may already know what U3A stands for but, if
not, it means University of the Third Age a nation wide organisation
primarily set up for older members of society to organise themselves
into activity groups that have similar interests in subjects where
they want to indulge, learn and enjoy doing.
Unfortunately,
the Greater Thame U3A is closing down due to a lack of volunteers
able or willing to run the organisation. After some 20 years of
existence many members are now too old to commit themselves to this
voluntary work even though the membership remains at about 125 persons.
However, a
number of alternative U3As are available in the area including one
with a large membership in the town of Thame. Here is a list of their websites:
Thame
and District U3A
Chinnor
and District U3A
Haddenham
U3A
Ridgeway
U3A
There is
also a useful site listing co-operative activities in the area
Thames
Valley Network
All U3As
are affiliated with the National U3A Trust and this site may be of interest.

Meanwhile,
matters remaining to be resolved for the Greater Thame u3a remain in
the hands of the defunct Committee of questionable competence. It is
likely they will be heavily influenced by the Committee Secretary who
other members came to rely upon in the believe that a pHd in Family
History qualifies as competence in entrepreneurial expertise. A
co-opted member of the Thames Valley Network will also advise
particularly in the aspect of asset disposal.
Asset
disposal consists of membership money held in the Lloyds Bank
including that of the Activity Groups where significant funds are
held in trust. Other assets with tangible values are the equipment
used for meeting presentations in the form of projectors, screens,
public address sound systems, laptops computers and other ancillary equipment.
It is
unlikely the Committee will consult with the membership about these
matters or seek approval so it remains to be seen what is announced
in the monthly newsletter which is edited by the Committee Secretary!
Further
pages of information relevant to members will be published shortly.
